தமிழ்நாட்டின் வளர்ச்சிக்கு வடசென்னை தொழிற்சாலைகள் பெரிதும் பங்களித்து வருகின்றன. இந்திய விடுதலைக்கு முற்பட்ட ஐரோப்பிய ஆட்சியின் கிழக்கிந்திய கம்பெனி முதல் இன்றுவரை பல்வேறு பன்னாட்டு நிறுவனங்களும் உள்நாட்டு நிறுவனங்களும் மதராசப்பட்டினத்து மக்களின் வாழ்வாதாரத்திற்கும் நாட்டின் பொருளாதார வளர்ச்சி விகிதத்தை உயர்த்துவதற்கும் தமது பங்களிப்பை வழங்கி வருகின்றன. பெரம்பூர் இரயில் பெட்டித் தொழிற்சாலை, எண்ணூர் அனல் மின் நிலையம், சென்னை பெட்ரோலியம் கார்ப்பரேட் நிறுவனம் முதலிய மத்திய அரசு நிறுவனங்களும், ஆவின் பால் பண்ணை போன்ற மாநில அரசு நிறுவனங்களும் தோல் தொழிற்சாலைகள், காகித நிறுவனங்கள், வீட்டு உபயோகப் பொருட்கள் தயாரிக்கும் தொழிற்சாலைகள், வாகன உதிரிப் பாகங்கள் தயாரிக்கும் தொழிற்சாலைகள் என பல்வேறு தனியார் தொழிற்சாலைகளும் வடசென்னையில் இயங்கி வருகின்றன. இதனால் எண்ணற்றோர் வேலைவாய்ப்பு பெற்றுப் பயனடைந்து வருகின்றனர். தொழிற்சாலைகளின் உற்பத்திப் பொருட்களைச் சேமித்து வைக்கும் கிடங்குகளும் மிகுதியாக இப்பகுதியில் இருக்கின்றன. அவ்விடங்களிலும் பலர் வேலைவாய்ப்பு கிடைக்கப்பெற்று தங்கள் குடும்பங்களைக் காப்பாற்றுகின்றனர். பரவலாக வடநாட்டு இளைஞர்கள் பணியாற்றுவதைப் பார்க்க முடிகின்றது. சென்னையின் வடபகுதியில் அதிக தொழிற்சாலைகள் இருப்பதற்கு உற்பத்திப் பொருட்களை ஏற்றுமதி இறக்குமதி செய்வதற்கு வசதியாக கடற்கரை துறைமுகம் அருகில் இருப்பது ஒரு முக்கிய காரணமாக பார்க்கப்படுகிறது. இவ்வாறு வடசென்னையின் தொழிற்சாலைகள் தமிழ்நாட்டின் வளர்ச்சிக்கு ஆற்றும் பங்களிப்பைத் தொகுத்து ஆவணப்படுத்துவதே இக்கருத்தரங்கின் நோக்கம்.
செவாலியர் டி. தாமஸ் எலிசபெத் மகளிர் மற்றும் மில்லினியம் காகித நிறுவனம் இந்தியா பிரைவேட் லிமிடெட் இணைந்து ‘தமிழக வளர்ச்சியில் வடசென்னை தொழிற்சாலைகளின் பங்கு ‘ என்னும் தலைப்பில் பன்னாட்டுக் கருத்தரங்கம் நடத்தவுள்ளனர். ஒரு சமூகத்தின் வளர்ச்சி என்பது உற்பத்திப் பொருள்களின் தன்மைகளைக் கொண்டு அமைகின்றது. மேலும் அடிப்படைத் தேவைகளை நிறைவு செய்யும் நோக்கில் செயல்படும் தொழில்முறைகள் பல்வேறு வகையான பண்டமாற்று முறைகளுக்கு வழி வகுக்கின்றன. உற்பத்திப் பொருட்களுக்கு அடிப்படை ஆதாரமாக விளங்குவது உழைப்பு. உழைப்பு சார்ந்து மக்களின் வாழ்வியலை மாற்றக் கூடிய சூழல் வடசென்னையில் நிலவுகின்றது. இதனை நோக்கமாகக் கொண்டு இக்கருத்தரங்கம் நடைபெறுகின்றது. உற்பத்திப் பொருட்களின் வளர்ச்சியால் முழுவதுமாக மாற்றப்பட்ட தமிழகத்தின் வளர்ச்சி நிலையைப் பதிவு செய்வது காலத்தின் தேவையாகிறது. இக்கருத்தரங்கிற்குப் பேராசிரியர்கள், வரலாற்று ஆர்வலர்கள், ஆய்வறிஞர்கள், ஆய்வு மாணவர்கள், கல்லூரி மாணவர்கள் ஆகியோரிடமிருந்து ஆய்வுக் கட்டுரைகள் வரவேற்கப்படுகின்றன.
வடசென்னையில் இயங்கி வரும் தொழிற்சாலைகளின் வரலாறு, காலனிய ஆட்சியில் தொடங்கப்பட்ட தொழிற்சாலைகள், தொழிற்சாலைகள் உருவாக்கப்பட்டதன் சமூகப் பின்புலம், தொழிற்சாலைகளின் மூலம் மக்களின் வாழ்வாதார மேம்பாடு, வேலை வாய்ப்பு விகிதங்கள், வடசென்னை தொழிற்சாலைகளும் தமிழகத்தின் பொருளாதார வளர்ச்சியும், தொழிற்சாலைகளும் சுற்றுச்சூழலும் போன்ற தலைப்புகளில் வடசென்னையை மையப்படுத்தி கட்டுரைகள் வழங்கலாம்.
The industrial zones of North Chennai have played a significant role in Tamil Nadu’s development. From the era of British colonial rule and the East India Company to the present day, numerous multinational and domestic companies have contributed to the livelihoods of the people of Madras (Chennai) and to the nation’s economic growth rate.
Central government industries like the Perambur Railway Coach Factory, Ennore Thermal Power Station, and Chennai Petroleum Corporation, as well as state government enterprises like the Aavin Dairy Farm, along with various private industries such as leather factories, paper mills, household goods manufacturers, and auto component manufacturers operate in North Chennai.
These industries have provided employment opportunities to thousands of people. The region also hosts a large number of warehouses for storing industrial goods, which offer additional employment and livelihood support. Due to the concentration of industries, North Chennai has become a destination for people seeking better livelihoods.
One key reason for the high number of industries in North Chennai is the proximity of the port, which facilitates easy import and export of goods.
The objective of this seminar is to compile and document the contribution of North Chennai’s industries to the development of Tamil Nadu.
Chevalier T. Thomas Elizabeth College for Women, in collaboration with Millennium Paper Mills India Pvt. Ltd., is organizing an international seminar titled “The Role of North Chennai Industries in Tamil Nadu’s Development.”
The development of a society is often measured by the quality of its production outputs. Industrial systems that aim to meet basic human needs also enable various forms of commodity exchange. Labour forms the fundamental basis for production, and in North Chennai, a labour-driven ecosystem exists that has the power to transform people’s livelihoods. This seminar aims to explore and document such an environment.
Tamil Nadu has undergone significant transformation due to the development of industrial goods, and documenting this economic shift has become a necessity of the times. The seminar invites research papers from professors, historians, researchers, research scholars, and college students.

Culture: Celebrating the vibrant cultural tapestry of North Madras, highlighting its traditions, artistic expressions, and cultural institutions that have shaped local identity and community cohesion.
Economy: Analyzing the economic dynamics of North Madras, including trade patterns, employment trends, and the intersection of local entrepreneurship with broader economic policies.
The focus of this year’s conference is on the theme of Industries: To examine the industrial landscape of North Madras, tracing its growth trajectory, economic contributions, and pivotal role in regional development.
The event will convene industry leaders, writers, social activists, academics, and students to analyze the historical growth, economic impact, and pivotal role of the industrial sector in the region’s development.
The intellectual outputs of these conferences, encompassing groundbreaking research papers, insightful case studies, and dynamic panel discussions, will be meticulously compiled into a series of four scholarly volumes.
