Conference on Enhancing Economic Growth through Democratic Participation

November 11, 2025

About the Conference

Democratic participation plays a vital role in shaping a nation’s economic trajectory. When citizens are actively involved in decision-making, policy formulation, and governance, it fosters inclusive growth, transparency, and accountability.

The 2024 Nobel Laureates in Economic Sciences—Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and James A. Robinson—highlight that inclusive political and economic institutions, grounded in democratic principles and the rule of law, are essential for sustainable long-term prosperity. Their work demonstrates how inclusive institutions promote innovation and broad-based economic growth, while extractive systems—those that concentrate power—impede development. These insights reinforce the conference’s focus on democratic participation as both a theoretical ideal and a practical driver of economic empowerment

This conference is being organized in the spirit of the International Year of Cooperatives, which celebrates the power of cooperative values—self-help, equality, and solidarity—in promoting sustainable economic and social development. Cooperatives embody the principles of democratic participation in action, providing communities with both economic empowerment and a stronger voice in governance.

By aligning with this global observance, the conference aims to highlight how participatory governance—whether through formal political systems or community-based cooperatives—can accelerate economic development and strengthen institutions for a more inclusive future.
