This Section details the different courses undertaken, over a period of Four Semesters to complete the Master Of Social Works – Postgraduate Program.
The courses are of the following varieties, Core papers that are mandatory, Electives that can be chosen from list of available electives and Laboratory practicals if applicable. The courses when successfully completed, collectively contribute towards the minimum requirement of awarding a Master’s degree.

Semester I
By the end of the course, students will be able to
● recollect concepts related to Social Work profession
● understand historical perspectives of the profession
● participate in social awareness programmes
● develop professional values and ethics, and identify themselves as professional social workers
By the end of the course, students will be able to
● remember terms and key principles of Social Work
● recognise individuals with social needs
● practise primary method of Social Work using theoretical knowledge
● implement social, behavioural, and humanistic theories in direct practice with individuals
By the end of the course, students will be able to
● understand practice of primary method of Social Work
● apply basic concepts related to group work in relevant areas
● criticise various models and approaches to group work
● implement social, behavioural, and humanistic theories in direct practice with different groups
By the end of the course, students will be able to
● understand critical problems and social realities
● analyse various social work setups
● develop analytical and assessment skills, values, and attitudes required for professional intervention
● recognise values and attitudes required for a professional social worker
By the end of the course, students will be able to
● remember concepts related to human growth and behaviour
● apply psycho-social theories in professional practice
● identify various personality traits using psycho-metrics test
● implement social and psychological theories in social work practice
Semester II
By the end of the course, students will be able to
● understand changing trends in rural, urban, and tribal communities
● acquire values and skills related to community organisation
● apply community organisation and social action methods to solve social problems

● develop a hypothesis and analyse research problem(s)
● apply various statistical tools and techniques to analyse data
● interpret findings of social work research

● implement practice-based research to check effectiveness of specific aspects of intervention
By the end of the course, students will be able to
● identify various types of disasters
● understand the process and administration of disaster management principles
● classify disaster victims into relevant types or groups
● exercise the role of a social worker during any disaster

By the end of the course, students will be able to
● empathise with oppressed and marginalised groups
● understand governmental, political, economic, social structures and policies
● foster social inclusion and equality by involving in community development programmes
● evaluate existing plans related to rural community development

● categorise legislations pertaining to an organisation
● critically analyse laws and their implementation in practice

By the end of the course, students will be able to
• understand concepts related to Medical Social Work
• diagnose various health conditions in hospital settings
• implement theories of Medical Social Work in a hospitalbased setting
• practise different models of health care in specific medical conditions
1. Community Development and Empowerment – Urban Community Development (HAW3B)
By the end of the course, students will be able to
• understand theories and concepts related to urban development
• analyse various developmental plans and their effects
• evaluate existing plans related to urban community development
• practise the skills obtained to uplift the urban poor
2. Human Resource And Management – Human Resource Management and Development (HAW3G)
By the end of the course, students will be able to
• observe principles, concepts, and strategies of HRD
• implement training methods and approaches for organisational purpose
• use trending HR concepts to reach organisational goals
• evaluate modern management skills in corporate settings
3. Medical And Psychiatric Social Work – Mental Health & Social Work (HAW3H)
By the end of the course, students will be able to
• understand international classification of diseases
• apply therapeutic skills to identify and treat who are mentally ill and require hospitalisation
• evaluate treatment approaches related to specific psychiatric conditions
• assess psycho-social modules for rehabilitation and reintegration

By the end of the course, students will be able to
● understand administrative setup of Panchayat Raj Institutions (PRIs), Panchayat Raj members, and their socio-economic and caste status
● analyse principles of Rural Community Development
● apply methods of professional social work in rural settings
● evaluate rural problems based on physical, ecological, socioeconomic, and political structures, living patterns, and community power structure
2. Human Resource Management (HAW31)
By the end of the course, students will be able to
● study history of agency, organisation chart, workforce, structure, and functions of Human Resource Department
● understand principles of manpower planning, recruitment, and selection criteria
● evaluate legislations pertaining to labour welfare measures
● practise intra-mural and extra-mural along with statutory and non-statutory measures
3. Medical and Psychiatric Social Work (HAW31)
By the end of the course, students will be able to
● prepare psycho-social assessment of patients’ diseases and disabilities
● implement intervention strategies with family and community as social support systems
● develop Social Case Work including identification, assessment, intervention, rehabilitation, and follow-up
● identify and undertake group therapeutic sessions
● organise needs-based or setting-based community health programmes
By the end of the course, students will be able to
● interact with other Schools of Social Work and social service organisations
● practise social work outside the jurisdiction of University of Madras
● assess concurrent field work agencies in terms of service delivery
● evaluate service activities and learning experience
By the end of the course, students will be able to

● apply counselling theories in professional practice
● identify personality traits of specific clients using psychometrics
● utilise counselling skills in social work and practice

2. Industrial Relations and Labor Welfare (HAW4C)

• identify stake holders of IR and enable good IR practice
• evaluate principles related to Industrial Relations and Labour Welfare in an organisation

● analyse policies and changes related to preventive and promotive aspects in health care
● implement social work interventions related to community health

• understand various concepts and theories related to entrepreneurship development

• apply primary and secondary methods of social work in psychiatric conditions
• document case histories and develop appropriate interventions related to specific psychiatric conditions
• practise psycho-education in medical and psychiatric social work
• create a holistic and integrated approach to social work practice in the field of mental health and psychiatry
