The Department of English, Chevalier T. Thomas Elizabeth College for Women, organised its Annual National Student Conference on “Rebooting Literature beyond Books: An Intersection of Young Adult Fiction, Fanfiction and Digital Culture” on 20th March 2025 in hybrid mode, with the participation of 150 students and scholars from across the country.

The conference aimed to explore the future of storytelling and its power to inspire, connect, and shape a new generation of readers and creators. The Convener, Dr. B.V. Saraswathy welcomed the gathering, while Ms. J. Rosanne launched the concept with a scholarly introduction. Ms. Beena Thomas, Head of the Department, offered her felicitations.

The conference featured distinguished speakers:

  • Ms. Cynthia Nirmala Rajah, Assistant Professor, English, St. Joseph’s University, Bengaluru – Delivered the Keynote Address, offering an in-depth exploration of Fanfiction, its global reach, and its role in reshaping literary creativity.

  • Dr. Narendiran S, Assistant Professor, English, St. Joseph’s Technical Institute, OMR, Chennai – Delivered the Special Address, tracing the origins and evolution of Young Adult Fiction and examining its transformation in the digital age.

The event featured 22 research paper presentations—12 from outside Chennai and 10 from city colleges—conducted in parallel online and offline sessions chaired by senior faculty. Ms. Jameela Fathima of II M.A. English presented the conference findings.

The conference successfully created a vibrant platform for academic dialogue, encouraged interdisciplinary research, and sparked student interest in emerging areas of literary studies, bridging the gap between traditional narratives and digital culture

Conference on Recent Advancements in Linear Algebra

The Department of Mathematics, in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Chevalier T. Thomas Elizabeth College for Women, organized a conference titled “Recent Advancements in Linear Algebra” on 12th March 2025. The objective of the conference was to bring together academicians, researchers, and professionals to explore the latest developments in linear algebra and its applications in various scientific and technological fields. The aim was to enhance theoretical understanding, introduce innovative computational techniques, and highlight interdisciplinary applications in areas such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and data science.

The conference featured two sessions:

Session 1: Conducted by Dr. A. Tamilselvi, Assistant Professor, Ramanujan Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics, University of Madras.
She provided an in-depth discussion on fundamental linear algebra concepts, including matrix transpose, inverse, conjugate, and Type-One matrices. She also introduced the concept of cryptography, explaining the role of linear algebra in securing digital communications through encryption and decryption techniques.

Session 2: Conducted by Dr. B. Sivakumar, Assistant Professor Grade III, SSN College of Engineering.
He focused on the practical applications of linear algebra in digital communication, explaining the mathematical principles behind photo and video transmission via WhatsApp, covering data compression and encryption methods. He also introduced Google Colab, demonstrating its utility for matrix computations and data analysis, and engaged participants in interactive exercises.

Objective:
The conference aimed to explore recent advancements in linear algebra and its interdisciplinary applications, with a focus on strengthening participants’ theoretical understanding and computational skills. It also highlighted the role of linear algebra in emerging technologies such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and data science.

Outcome:
The event enhanced participants’ understanding of both theoretical and applied aspects of linear algebra while providing hands-on exposure to computational tools like Google Colab. It also encouraged participants to pursue further research in mathematics and its applications in modern technology.

The Department of Accounting & Finance, in collaboration with NSE and IQAC, organized the International Conference on Emerging Trends and Innovation in Finance and Technology on 28th February 2025 in virtual mode. The event featured expert talks by Mr. Caris Antony Mampilly, Dr. Nithya Ramachandran, Dr. R. Gowtham, Dr. Vaishali Ojha, and Mr. Syama Sundar, covering topics such as AI in finance, decentralized finance, networking for career growth, and automation in financial services.

A total of 26 research papers were presented on themes including Green Finance, Ethical AI, Financial Inclusion, Smart Contracts, and Big Data. Over 50 presenters and 150 students participated, gaining valuable insights into technological innovations and their impact on the financial sector. The conference served as a platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and fostering future research in finance and technology.

The International Conference on “The Origin and Progress of Psychology – Laying the Foundation for Students’ Future”, organized by the Department of Psychology, Chevalier T. Thomas Elizabeth College for Women in association with CSIR – Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology, Bhubaneswar, brought together eminent scholars, practitioners, and students to explore the rich historical journey of psychology. Over two days, the event featured eight technical sessions led by distinguished experts who traced the discipline’s evolution from ancient philosophical roots to contemporary scientific advancements.

The conference provided a platform for sharing research through paper presentations, with 21 selected papers presented under diverse subthemes, and recognized the best contributions with awards. The sessions enriched participants’ understanding of psychology’s theoretical foundations, practical applications, and emerging trends, while inspiring academic curiosity and professional growth.

Day 1
The first day of the conference featured insightful sessions from eminent experts in psychology and allied fields.
Dr. Sulthan Ahmed Ismail, Member of the State Planning Commission, Tamil Nadu, discussed the intricate link between climate change and mental health, drawing attention to its impact on women and children, as well as broader environmental challenges like the sustainability of electric vehicles, summer power shortages, and the damaging effects of pesticides on soil and biodiversity.
Dr. M. Malaiappan, Psychiatrist and Director of the Institute of Mental Health, Tamil Nadu, clarified misconceptions around mental health, distinguishing between normal and abnormal behavior, and highlighting the biological, psychological, and social dimensions influencing well-being.
Dr. V. Suresh, Former Professor and Head of the Department of Psychology, Annamalai University, provided an overview of the major schools of psychology and underscored their relevance in everyday life beyond academic study.
Dr. V.D. Swaminathan, Retired Professor, University of Madras, and Chief Mentor, Thunai, reflected on psychology as both an art and a science, charting its journey from early experimental labs to modern intersections with artificial intelligence, data science, and machine learning.

Day 2
Day two opened with Dr. Razeena Padman, Retired Professor and Director of the School of Behavioral Sciences, MG University, Kerala, offering a detailed exploration of Sigmund Freud’s life, theories, and psychoanalytic stages of development.
Dr. Keerthi Pai, Founder and Vice President of the Clinical Psychology Society of India, elaborated on the various specializations within clinical psychology while emphasizing ethical practice and professional responsibility.
SI Elantamil Komahan, Commander, Indian Navy, presented the applications of psychology in defense and military operations, outlining the examinations and competencies required for entry and progression in the sector.
The day concluded with a recorded address by Ms. Sabhyata Verma, from the Ministry of Social Service, Government of Saskatchewan, Canada, who shared international perspectives on psychology and reflected on the conference’s overarching themes, reinforcing the global relevance of psychological principles.

Objective

To chronicle the development of psychology from ancient philosophical thought to present-day scientific innovation, equipping students and faculty with historical context, practical skills, and insights into emerging opportunities in the field.

Outcome

The two-day event enriched academic knowledge, promoted ethical and applied perspectives, encouraged research engagement, and expanded professional networks. The Library and IQAC of Chevalier T. The event commenced with an invocation and the traditional lighting of the lamp, followed by a warm welcome by Dr. Sumuki Padmanabhan, Librarian & Conference Convener. Dr. Srilakshmi B, Librarian, Sir Theagaraya College, introduced the conference theme through the Concept Launch.

The Inaugural Address was delivered by Mr. Akshay Bhuvaneswari Ramakrishnan, Intel Innovator, USA, followed by the Keynote Address by Dr. Radhika Rani B, HoD & BoS Chairperson, Department of Library & Information Science, Kakatiya University, Warangal. The Presidential Address was given by Thiru. L. Palamalai, I.A.S. (Retd.), Managing Trustee & Correspondent, CTTE Trust. Prof. Dr. Sasi Kanta Dhas, Principal, Tagore Government Arts & Science College and Former Registrar, Pondicherry University, and ‘Padma Shri’ Palam Kalyanasundaram, Retired Librarian & Social Worker, delivered special addresses. The dignitaries then released the Conference Souvenir.

  • Dr. T. C. Thirunavukkarasu, Librarian and Information Assistant, Anna Centenary Library, Chennai, spoke on Developing AI-Driven Applications for Streamlining Complex Library Tasks, demonstrating how AI solutions can simplify and optimise library workflows.
  • Dr. J. Jeba Joselin, Librarian and Information Officer, Kalaignar Centenary Library, Madurai, discussed AI in Action: Integrating AI in Library Operations and Library Services, highlighting practical implementations of AI to improve operational efficiency and user experience in libraries.

The event aimed to explore Munshi Premchand’s significant contributions to Hindi fiction and how his narratives continue to resonate with contemporary socio-political and cultural contexts. The conference witnessed participation from scholars, academicians, and students from national and international institutions.

The conference featured distinguished speakers:

  • Dr. Vivekmani Tripathi, Associate Professor, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, China – Delivered the Chief Guest address, emphasising the global relevance of Premchand’s writings and the timeless moral and literary essence in his fiction.

  • Dr. Manju Rustogi, Retired Head of Department, Valliammal College for Women – Served as Guest of Honour, commending the research presentations, providing constructive feedback, and highlighting Premchand’s enduring influence on modern Hindi literature.

  • Prof. B.L. Aacha, Retired Ex-HOD, Government Madhav Science PG College, Ujjain (M.P.) – Acted as Guest Speaker, sharing critical insights into Premchand’s depiction of rural India, human psychology, and social justice.

  • Dr. Vasudevan Shesh, Retired Hindi Officer, Central Government, Chennai – Delivered the Valedictory address, focusing on the ethical dimensions and contemporary applications of Premchand’s values and ideals.

The Postgraduate and Research Department of English organized an international interdisciplinary conference titled “Interdisciplinary Intersections in Contemporary English Language and Literature: The Way Forward” on 16th December 2024. The objective of the conference was to foreground the importance of collaborative research and highlight the growing intersections of English studies with other disciplines in the contemporary academic context.

The conference commenced with a Welcome Address by Mrs. Beena Thomas, Head of the Department. Dr. S. Armstrong, Professor and Head, PG & Research Department of English, University of Madras, delivered the Presidential Address, followed by the Concept Launch by the Convenor, Dr. K. Fahamida Begum. The Keynote Address was delivered by Dr. Muthmainnah, Assistant Professor, Department of Indonesian Language Education, University of Al Asyariah Mandar, Indonesia, who emphasized the need for cross-disciplinary approaches, particularly in integrating AI tools with language learning.

The conference featured four Plenary Speakers:

The Valedictory Address was delivered by Dr. K.N. Shoba, Associate Professor, Department of Engineering Education, NITTTR, Chennai. Mrs. M. Priyadarshini summarized the conference proceedings, and the Vote of Thanks was proposed by Ms. J. Rosanne.

The conference hosted seven paper presentation sessions, each chaired by faculty members from the Department of English, providing a participatory platform for researchers to share their interdisciplinary work.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Prashant S. Rana, Professor, AIML, VIT Chennai, who presented insights on “Performance Analysis of Pre-Trained Models Using TOPSIS”, emphasizing how advanced computational models are revolutionizing data-driven decision-making.

The Department of Chemistry at Chevalier T. The event commenced with a formal welcome and thematic overview, emphasizing the pivotal role of chemistry in addressing global challenges. This was followed by a keynote address by Prof. Dr. Dilek Cokeliler Serdaroglu, Chair of the Science Institute, Başkent University, Ankara, Turkey. Her talk highlighted interdisciplinary innovation in biomedical engineering and its connection to chemical research.
