Community Research and Development Project

Project Vidiyal

North Chennai Educational Transformation Initiative (2024–2029)

Chevalier T. Thomas Elizabeth College for Women has undertaken a structured Community Development Initiative aimed at strengthening school education in North Chennai through research, collaboration, and capacity building.

Motivation

The initiative emerged from direct engagement with schools in North Chennai, where faculty interactions revealed significant challenges affecting student learning, including declining enrolment in science streams, gaps in understanding, limited career awareness, and low student confidence.

These observations highlighted the need for a structured response that addresses both classroom practices and institutional leadership.

The project is grounded in established educational thought:

  • John Dewey’s pragmatism, which emphasises learning through experience and meaningful application
  • Socratic enquiry, which promotes questioning, reflection, and critical thinking
  • Mary Wollstonecraft’s emphasis on education for empowerment, particularly in enabling learners to think independently

Education must move beyond transmission of knowledge to active, meaningful learning.

Objectives

  •  To develop an evidence-based understanding of school education in North Chennai
  • To promote learning through experience, enquiry, and reflection
  • To create platforms for academic dialogue and collaboration among educators and institutions
  • To document educational practices and challenges through research and publication
  • To design context-driven pedagogical frameworks that support meaningful learning
  • To strengthen teacher capacity through continuous professional development
  • To enable classrooms that foster thinking, application, and confidence
  • To engage school leaders in addressing policy–practice gaps and institutional challenges
  • To support inclusive and empowering education, especially for first-generation learners
