About Maryland Library

Our History

Library initially functioned in the Auditorium with the collection of 2810 books.

In the academic year 2003-04, the library was upgraded with modern facilities and caters to the various needs of the users.

The present state of art ‘Maryland library‘ in Dr. Elizabeth Thomas Block was inaugurated on 16th June 2016 by Mr.R. Venkatesan, I.A.S and has a collection of more than 27219 documents comprising of books, theses, audio-visual materials, bound back volumes of journals and magazines to provide information support to its users. The total area of the Library building is about 5206 sq.ft. It accommodates Stack, Periodicals, OPAC (4 systems), PG & Research Section (1 System), Circulation (3 Systems), E-Resource Centre (11 Systems) and Reprography. 5 cameras are placed at strategic points in the library for surveillance and 4 Fire Extinguishers are provided.

Civil Services Section

The college library has a separate section for IAS books and study material which is open to all registered candidates. The IAS section has books on History, Public Administration, Economics, Commerce and General Studies and updated with latest syllabus of CSAT.  Library subscribes 10 periodicals, 3 newspapers and also Civil Service India E-Magazine. User ID & Password given to all the aspirants of the academy. Civil Service section is updated with books recommended by Correspondent for Civil Services Exams. 

Book Bank Section

The book bank facility is provided only for the weaker section students. Reference and textbooks and also other books relevant to U.G and P.G courses are procured and retained in Book bank Section. A student can borrow a maximum of 6 books with a maximum loan period of one semester.

Periodicals Section

Periodical section acquires/manages journals/periodicals (both in print & electronic form) to provide researchers with resources that are useful to enhance their research projects. To keep its readers abreast with the latest developments the library currently subscribes to 50 Journals (34 National and 16 International Journals), in printed form, 11Newspapers and 32 Magazines, 13 Peer reviewed journals of SAGE Management are also available both online and in print. As Associate Member of ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu we receive its publications regularly the library has also subscribed to British Council Online Membership and NDL of India, a virtual repository of learning resources.

Braille Section

The Braille Section in the library is equipped with NVDA (Non-Visual Desktop Access) software, which helps to convert video files to audio files. Library also receives Braille magazines from the Anna Centenary Library.

OPAC System : Autolib

The Open Access System makes the library user-friendly. Library can accommodate 170 students at a time. The library uses a commercial Library Management Software (AUTOLIB), which supports all in-house operations and services of the Library.

Dspace : Digital Insitutional repository

The library also hosts Dspace, a digital Institutional repository of research. It contains college publications, University Question Papers, Theses and other related documents. Faculty and researchers may contribute their own publications for uploading in the Dspace.

The Library Advisory Committee meets twice in a semester to discuss the functioning of the library and improvement of the library infrastructure.

The committee plans, the following activities:

  • Library Orientation Programmes
  • Purchase of Books, Journals, Magazines and E-Resources
  • Librarian’s Day Celebrations
  • Readers’ Club Meetings
  • Inter-school and Inter–Departmental Competitions

All the requirements of the Library are planned and sketched which is approved by the Principal.

Rules & Regulations

  • Library Entry and Services are restricted to only to members with valid Library membership card.
  • The Gate Register is placed near the entrance and each visitor is required to register the visit on entering the Library.
  • Books borrowed must be returned on or before the due date.
  • Three renewals can be done for every book issued.
  • Books will have to be physically presented for renewals.
  • Books will be renewed if there are no reservations.
  • Users are requested to verify the physical condition of the book/s before borrowing.
  • For late return of books, overdue charges will be collected as per rules in force.
  • Users are requested to deposit their bags/belongings (other than valuables) at the personal belongings counter.
  • Users are required to observe silence inside the library.
  • Users are required to switch off the lights and fans when not required or while leaving the reading halls.
  • Misuse of library facilities is an offence and calls for punishment as decided by the competent authority.
  • Users are required to keep the library and the campus neat and tidy.

Book Quotas, Lending period & Overdue charges

Category No: of Books Loan Period General Penalty Rules
All  teaching staff 10 One Semester An overdue charge of Rs. 1.00  per day per volume will be collected for returning the books after the due date borrowed by them.
Non-teaching  Staff 2 One Semester The Loan period may be shortened by the librarian if the books are on special demand.

Research Scholars       (M. Phil students)

4 14 days Books given for loan may be renewed for a further period provided no other reader has reserved the same.
Post-Graduate students 4 14 days A member can reserve a book which is on loan, with OPAC.
Under-Graduate Students 2 7 days The Librarian reserves the right to recall any books from any member at any time.
Book Bank (Subject)+(Language) 2+2 One Semester Transfer of Books is not permissible
