Debate Forum on “Should Cognitive Biases Be Accepted or Eliminated?”

The Department of Psychology organised a Debate Forum on the topic “Should Cognitive Biases Be Accepted or Eliminated?” to stimulate analytical thought and academic discourse among students. The session, held on 17 October 2025, aimed to examine the pervasive influence of cognitive biases on human judgement and to explore whether such biases should be recognised as natural cognitive tendencies or consciously mitigated through education and awareness.

Students were divided into two teams—For Acceptance and For Elimination—each presenting well-researched arguments supported by psychological theories, empirical studies, and real-world illustrations.

The session was moderated by Ms Priya Emmanuel, Assistant Professor, Shri Shankarlal Sundarbai Shasun Jain College for Women, who guided the discussion with insightful commentary and ensured academic rigour throughout the proceedings.

The debate proved to be an engaging and intellectually stimulating session that encouraged students to reflect on the inevitability of biases in decision-making and perception. The discussion brought to light several forms of cognitive biases, such as confirmation biasanchoring bias, and self-serving bias, connecting them to both everyday experiences and established psychological research.

Teams demonstrated commendable analytical depth, referencing the works of Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky to substantiate their arguments. The exchange of perspectives revealed the complexity of human cognition, highlighting that while biases can hinder objectivity, they may also function as adaptive mechanisms that simplify decision-making in uncertain contexts.

Ms Emmanuel concluded the session by emphasising the dual nature of cognitive biases—as both adaptive and limiting—and commended the participants for their clarity of reasoning and intellectual enthusiasm.

Her interactive session resonated deeply with students and encouraged them to begin with small but meaningful contributions to environmental conservation.

The theme ‘Echoes of the Earth’ was further explored through four competitions: Elocution, Paint a Poem, Tiny Tales, and Group Singing. These events gave voice to the planet through speech, art, and storytelling. In Elocution, students delivered on-the-spot speeches based on the core theme. In Paint a Poem, participants selected an eco-themed poem and interpreted it visually through creative expression. In Tiny Tales, students wrote short stories based on a given sustainability prompt, showcasing their narrative skills. In Compose and Sing a Poem – Voices for a Better World, teams composed and performed original poems set to music on themes such as Climate Action, Gender Equality, Peace and Justice, and Life on Land & Below Water.
