Research Program - Master of Philosophy, English

The Master of Philosophy – English program has one section with a sanctioned strength of twelve students per batch.

The program exposes the students to the study of texts in contexts with emphasis on creative and critical understanding of life through literature.

Minimum requirements for applying to the program

The Master of Philosophy – English program, at minimum, requires the applicant to have completed Post Graduation in English with 55% marks.

M.Phil. (English) program has to be applied through Madras University. The candidate has to appear for a written entrance exam and a personal interview in the College as per University Guidelines

Objective

The objective of the department is to contribute to the growth of individuals by combining self-confidence and a firm sense of personal and social responsibility.

About Us

The Department of English came into being in 1985 along with the inception of the college. It was upgraded into a Post Graduate Department in 2005 and into a Research Department in 2012.

The Department has 14 faculty members on its roll which includes a few highly experienced members. Students who join the department for the UG programme can pursue their studies upto the doctoral level in our institution.

Master of Philosophy – Program Outcomes

Upon the successful completion of M. Phil. program, students will be able to

i) Apply theoretical knowledge and specialized skills to enhance their teaching abilities

ii) Involve in projects, follow research guidelines, and draft scholarly articles for presentation or publication

iii) Develop and integrate life-long learning to become proactive in personal and professional lives

Code of Ethics on Research

The candidates have to declare in the thesis that the work is original in nature. It is mandatory that all research papers, projects, theses and dissertations submitted by the students have to be original research work of the scholar without any element of plagiarism. If any research work is found to be plagiarized that work will not be accepted for submission and a report will be sent to the university. The University of Madras has created a portal for checking plagiarism in PhD theses.

The courses when successfully completed, collectively contribute towards the minimum requirement of awarding a Master of Philosophy degree.

M.Phil English – Program Specific Outcomes:

Upon the successful completion of M.Phil.(English) program, students will be able to

i) Identify themes, narratives, genres, and socio-political elements in literary works

ii) Evaluate and interpret key theoretical issues and appreciate aesthetic dimensions of literature

iii) Pursue careers demanding writing and communicative skills, locally and globally

Semester I

Paper I: Research Methodology in Literature and Literary Theories

By the end of the course, students will be able to    

  • Acquire in-depth knowledge of research methodology
  • Undertake advanced research projects and evaluate outcomes
  • Interpret key theoretical issues in literary texts
  • Analyse literary works using literary theories
  • Compare eastern and western aesthetics and evaluate literary works

Paper II: Contemporary Literature

By the end of the course, students will be able to    

  • Identify themes, narratives, genres, and socio-political elements in literary works from various geographic locations
  • Distinguish between language variations in literary texts from specific geographic locations
  • Interpret key theoretical issues in literary texts
  • Apply appropriate cultural aesthetics to interpret literary texts
  • Analyse literary texts to grasp the deeper sense hidden under the surface using the hermeneutic tools
  • Synthesise theoretical knowledge for creative and critical appreciation

Semester II

Paper III: Internal Paper – Area of Specialization

  • Based on the area of specialization chosen by the Research Scholar

 

Paper IV: Dissertation and Viva-voce

  • Based on the research completed by the Research Scholar
